Mother’s Day Real Talk: Why I Refused to Choose Between Career and Motherhood

(And Built a Business That Lets Me Have It All)

Spoiler alert: The idea that women have to choose between their career and motherhood? Absolute rubbish.

I know, because I refused to choose—and I made it work.

Let me take you back a few years…

My career didn’t start in a swanky office or from behind a shiny MacBook. It started with pouring pints 🍺, serving coffees ☕, and clearing up chaotic banquet halls (sticky tables, empty glasses, and the occasional "Can I speak to the manager?" drama). Glamorous? Not quite. But it taught me more than any classroom ever could.

Somewhere between the coffee runs and chaos, I discovered I had a knack for organisation, communication, and keeping things ticking—even when it all felt like it was falling apart.

Eventually, I found myself in my first “proper” office job, thriving in event planning, sales, and multitasking—while perfecting the art of office sarcasm (a survival skill in any 9-5, let’s be honest 😅).

And then? Life happened.

I became a mum.

Suddenly, the corporate world wasn’t so understanding. I was put on the spot—career or child?

And the truth? No matter which option I chose, it came with guilt. If I focused on my career, I’d miss those precious early moments. But if I stayed home full-time, I knew I’d feel like I was giving up a part of myself.

I tried to make it work. But the thought of waking up at 5am, getting myself and a tiny human ready, rushing to the childminder, battling traffic, clocking in by 9am—and doing that 3–5 days a week? I just knew I’d burn out.

Trying to be a “perfect” mum, meet pre-baby work expectations, keep up with housework, find time for my marriage and squeeze in a bit of self-care (still working on that one, by the way 😂)—it felt impossible.

Flexibility was a game changer. And still is.

So I did what any determined, stubborn, slightly sleep-deprived mum would do:
I carved out my own path.

I built my own virtual assistant business, working from home on my terms. I support incredible clients by taking the boring, stressful tasks off their plates—admin, website updates, content support, property management—you name it. And I get to do it while being the kind of mum I want to be.

Now, here I am—about to celebrate my third Mother’s Day, building a business I love, creating a brand that feels so me, and doing it all without having to choose between my son and my ambitions.

To all the mums reading this—especially the working mums, the business mums, the ones building empires during nap times or in between nursery runs:

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY. 💐

I see you. I am you. And I hope you always know:
You never have to choose between being a brilliant mum and a badass businesswoman.

Because we can have it all—on our terms.

“I’m a millennial woman, and I want it all. A fulfilling career, time with my son, financial independence, flexibility—why should I have to pick one over the other?

So, I did what any doer would do—I made my own path.

And guess what? You can too.

Whether you’re a mum considering a career change, feeling stuck between two worlds, or already running a business and barely keeping your head above water—know that there is another way. A way that works for you, not against you.

💬 Feeling inspired? I’d love to hear your story. Drop me a message, leave a comment, or share this with a fellow mum who needs to hear it today.

And if you’re a business owner ready to hand over the tasks that are draining your time and energy—I’m here to help you get things off your plate and done properly, so you can focus on what truly lights you up.
